CROSS OF GRACE
Icon Rebrand Case Study
Cross of Grace Church is a religious organization in El Paso, Texas. They already had a logo and an icon. Since it's hard to use the logo in smaller applications, they designed what was basically three concentric circles with the initials (COG). After living with the logo for a bit, it was not really working for them anymore. It's also virtually identical to other ministry icons.
My goal was to create an icon that would fit their current branding, but still, stand out and be unique among the other churches in the El Paso area. The logo uses the font Brandon Grotesque, and the same is reflected in their previous icon. I did not want to stray far from the look and feel of their current logo so I stuck with the same font.
THE DIRECTIONS
I gave them two directions. The first one utilized the look of the building, and though the building was just a square, I added the cellphone tower to give it a more intresting look. The second direction I wanted to play with the initials “COG”. Being from the Sun City I chose to use the “O” from the font with the cross in front of it, to represent the sun while still abstractly spelling their initials out.
KIDS MINISTRY
With the final icon done, I worked on their kid's ministry design. Their theme for their kid's ministry is “campground”. Keeping some of the same elements I created another icon for them with a forest/campground theme. I left the cellphone tower and added pine trees and a mountain in the background. The hope for the future for them is as they add more ministries (youth, homeless, adult, etc.) they could use their original as a template.
